J oy Fern Mayhew age 69 of Fontana, KS died Saturday October 29, 2016 at the Life Care Center of Osawatomie.

Joy was born August 9, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas.  She was the youngest of five children born to Clarence Abraham and Erma Senith (Sanner) Adkins.  She grew up and attended school in Topeka, Kansas.  On April 4, 1964 she married Gary Mayhew in Lawrence, Kansas.  They made their home in Topeka.  Together they had one child, John Eugene Mayhew.

When John was six, Joy and her family moved to Olathe, Kansas.  Where she worked for Broadway Collections, Hire Boots, and at a locksmith company.  Then in 1985, the family moved to Fontana, Kansas.  Joy worked for ADM until 1992 when she started working for USD 368 as a custodian.  She continued to work for the school district until 2009 when she retired.

Joy was a crafter.  She enjoyed crocheting Afghans and would give them as presents to her family. Painting ceramic wolves was another favorite pastime.  She also built and decorated bird houses and designed her own lamp shades.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years Gary of the home, son John (Judy) Mayhew of Olathe, KS, one grandson John B. Mayhew of Gardner, KS.  Along with many other family and friends.
