Randall J. Henness

Randall “Randy” Joseph Henness (also known affectionately by many as “Dogbones”), 73, passed away at home on July 6, 2026. He was born April 19, 1953, to Wayne and Phyllis Henness.

Randy attended Catholic school in Osawatomie through middle school, then Osawatomie High School, graduating in 1972.

In 1980, he married Laura Lea Dugan. Together they raised four children. Randy was a hardworking, patient, and calm man who set a high standard for what it meant to be a father. He led by example, always putting his family first and showing steady love and support throughout his life.

Randy spent his life outdoors, fishing and golfing, and in his 20s he raced motocross. He was also a devoted sports fan. He worked at Behm and MoPac before moving to Sunflower Munitions, then became a real estate agent for JC Nichols and a merchandiser for Pepsi Co. He retired as a custodian for the Spring Hill, Kansas school district.

While his quiet strength defined much of who he was, Randy also had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved making people laugh and was always doing something silly or unexpected to bring a smile to those around him. Whether through a joke, a funny face, or one of his playful antics, he found joy in making others happy. His family will forever cherish the laughter, memories, and love he brought into their lives.

Above all else, Randy’s greatest pride was his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, patience, humor, and unwavering devotion that will continue through the generations that follow.

Randy is survived by his four children: Derek and wife Nicole of Osawatomie, Kansas; Ryan and wife Nina of Olathe, Kansas; AJ and wife Amy of Paola, Kansas; and Rachel and partner Floyd of Osawatomie, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, Ellie (daughter of Rachel and Floyd), Aria, Kai, and Mia (children of Ryan and Nina), and Emerson, Isla, Guile, Aspen, and Erdrick (children of AJ and Amy); brother David Henness of Osawatomie; sister Beth Wuellner (Roger) of Osawatomie; brother-in-law Mike Evans of Spring Hill, Kansas; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Phyllis Henness, and his sister, Joanne Evans.

Randy wished to be cremated but there will be a visitation Friday July 10, 2026 from 6-8 pm at the Eddy Birchard Funeral Home. Memorial service is scheduled for Saturday July 11, 2026 at 11 am at the Eddy Birchard Chapel. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Osawatomie Cemetery.
